Smart\nTextiles and Science Park Bor\u00e5s are helping to develop and produce protective\naprons for the death care industry in Sweden. Together with the company K.A.P\nSweden, washable aprons made from an approved overstock material, can now be\ndelivered to staff at funeral homes and others working in the industry.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

When the\nSwedish Funeral Directors’ Association (SBF, for its Swedish name, Sveriges Begravningsbyr\u00e5ers F\u00f6rbund<\/em>)\nrequested safe and washable protective aprons for its staff, the company K.A.P.\nDesign, based in Bor\u00e5s, was quick to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agneta\nPersson, a tailor and designer at K.A.P Sweden, had already delivered various\ntypes of garments for employees in the death care industry prior to the\nCovid-19 pandemic. The work is based in the large studio on the second floor of\nthe Textile Fashion Center, which she shares with other entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nconnection with Covid-19, there has been a decrease in regular orders. This led\nAgneta and her partner Joakim Tellenmark, Sales and Marketing Manager at K.A.P\nSweden, to think about what employees needed instead, with regards to the\nchanged conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the\nquestion was put to the Swedish Funeral Directors’ Association, they didn\u2019t\nhave to wait for an answer \u2013 protective aprons!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This\nis my profession, so it feels good to be able to offer assistance where it is\nneeded,” says Agneta Persson of K.A.P Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to\naddress the need, Agneta Persson turned to Mathias Br\u00e4ck, Innovation Technician\nat Science Park Bor\u00e5s, to see if the cutting could be done differently, so that\nshe wouldn\u2019t have to cut out each apron by hand with scissors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the\nhelp of Eva Lindell, Research Assistant at Smart Textiles, Agneta and Mathias\nworked on the original pattern and adapted it digitally to the cutting machine\nin the DO-tank Center, Science Park Bor\u00e5s\u2019s innovation environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA washable\napron can hopefully replace several hundred disposable aprons. That’s why this\nproject is important. Death care staff are a professional group that may not be\na priority when it comes to protective clothing, but we think that everyone who\nhas a need in this situation should have it met,” says Mathias Br\u00e4ck at\nScience Park Bor\u00e5s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approved\nfabric from local producer <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fabric\nused is a black, waterproof, and washable nylon fabric from FOV Fabrics AB in\nBor\u00e5s. The fabric was left over from previous production and there are as many\nas eight thousand meters of fabric available. The water resistance is 5000 mm,\nwhich can be compared to a water gauge of 1000 mm for disposable aprons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\nmeans something very special to us that the aprons are made of a washable material\nfrom a local textile producer. We shouldn\u2019t move backwards when it comes to the\nsustainability mindset simply because we are in times of crisis,” says\nMathias Br\u00e4ck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first\norder of protective aprons has been delivered and now the corresponding industry\nassociation in Norway is also awaiting delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\nfeels great to be able to help the industry, which, like everyone else, has had\nsignificant problems in finding good quality protective clothing,” says\nJoakim Tellenmark, Sales and Marketing Manager at K.A.P Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
